Farmers are looking for a solution that:

  • Protects teat condition
  • Supports udder health
  • Maintains or improves efficiency

From milking speed to teat-friendly milking

Many farms focus on milking speed and production, but the teat carries the pressure of every milking. Whether cows are milked by robot or in a conventional parlour, repeated strain on the teat tissue and teat end can lead to rough teat ends, hyperkeratosis, and a higher risk of mastitis when recovery time is too limited.

This affects not only animal health, but also milking performance. A weaker teat barrier makes it easier for bacteria to enter, which can impact udder health, milk quality, SCC, and the overall stability of the milking routine.

Let’s explore how AktivPULS can support better teat condition and more stable udder health in your herd.

More natural milking thanks to a massage effect on the teat end

™AktivPULS was developed to create a natural massage effect during milking. The goal is clear: less stress on the teat tissue, create healthier teat ends.

Healthier teats help the cow defend itself better against bacteria and help lower the risk of mastitis. At the same time, milking becomes calmer, more stable, and the cows easier to manage.

  • A calmer teat appearance after milking
  • Smoother milk release and a more stable milk flow
  • More efficient milking, while maintaining comfort
  • Support in limiting hyperkeratosis and teat tip damage

“If she’s comfortable, she’ll show it herself”

Field trials were conducted at 12 robotic milking farms to monitor the cows’ behavior. At these farms, we observed that a more comfortable milking process can be reflected in the cows’ behavior: greater calmness and, at some of the farms, more voluntary visits to the robot.

The measurement period spanned more than 100 days, with both shorter and longer measurement intervals. On average, a measurement series lasted 54 days. The participating farms were spread across the Netherlands and varied in herd size, breeds, management, and grazing strategy.

The cows showed the effect themselves by visiting the robot more frequently.

  • When cows come more often, it has a positive impact on milk-out efficiency and overall milk production.
  • Better milk-out also contributes to improved udder health
  • Healthier teat ends, supporting long-term herd performance.

The testing period covered more than 100 days, including both short and long measurement intervals, with an average duration of 54 days. The 12 robotic farms involved were located across the Netherlands and represented different herd sizes, breeds, management approaches and grazing strategies.

From the results we see a clear differentiation in outcomes across the farms:

  • Six farms demonstrated an increase in milking visits.
  • Two farms showed a decrease, which could be related to grazing strategies.
  • Four farms maintained the same number of milkings per cow per day.

These teat liners have brought me two benefits. The first is an improvement in the teat ends. When drying, you have to search for the teat holes. But just as importantly, there’s been a huge improvement in milk flow. I found switching teat liners quite nerve-wracking. After all, I was switching from rubber to silicone. But the somatic cell count results dropped from 170 to 63. I’m very happy with that. Another thing I’m very pleased with is the interval between changes. With rubber, I had to do it every 2,500 milks. Now it’s every 10,000. That still saves a lot of work. After 2.5 years of milking with AktivPULS, I certainly won’t be going back to another type of liner.

"Fewer mastitis cases thanks to AktivPULS milking liners"

My advisor recommended trying AktivPULS: silicone teat liners with air ventilation and maintaining milking speed. That promise has been fulfilled. The milking speed is now 3.2 liters per minute, the number of mastitis cases has dropped significantly, and the teat tips are in perfect condition.

"From 2–3 mastitis treatments per month to sometimes none: AktivPULS reduced both work and stress."

"After about three years of using the AP unit, the difference is clear. We went from 2 to 3 treatment cows every month to sometimes 1, and sometimes zero. That means fewer cows that need separate milking with a bucket, which directly saves labor. The cows are easier to milk, and we see better teat condition with less vacuum stress. In the beginning we had to fine-tune the vacuum settings, but once PureLine adjusted it properly, liner slip disappeared and the system became very stable."

"Lower mastitis pressure helps us run an efficient dairy business while expanding our gelato production."

"We work with a small team, so daily efficiency is everything. With fewer mastitis cases, we spend far less time on treatments and problems around milking. That stability is important because we also focus on added value, like our gelato shop using our own high-quality raw milk. The milk quality drives the final product taste. The AP unit supports a smoother, more efficient routine, giving us room to grow without increasing workload too much."

"The teat cups became lighter, and my daily workload was clearly reduced. We can also say we have less mastitis"

“In the past, we used conventional liners, but we regularly struggled with teat-end damage and early signs of mastitis. We were looking for a solution that would be gentler on the teats while improving milking efficiency. At first, we focused on reducing labor strain. The AP Unit immediately stood out because of its lighter teat cups and improved handling. Now, because the teats are treated more gently, we see fewer problems, less stress for the cows. We want to continue improving our farm step by step. With the AP Unit, we have a system that supports udder health, animal welfare, and efficient farm management. That makes it a long-term solution for us.”

Suitable for every milking system

™AktivPULS was developed for milking robots, parlors and carousels. All with one guiding principle: the moment of contact at the teat must be stable and teat-friendly, regardless of the system you use for milking. That’s why we offer models that integrate with various types of brands.

You’ll receive advice based on your setup, settings, and goals. This way, you don’t just choose “any liner,” but a model that suits your herd.

FAQ

A massage effect helps reduce stress on the teat tissue and keeps the teat end more relaxed. This can contribute to greater comfort and a more stable milk flow, while supporting the natural barrier of the teat end in milking robots and milking machines for cows.

Hyperkeratosis is the hardening of the teat end. A teat end that is irritated or thickened may be less effective at supporting the natural seal. This increases the likelihood of bacteria penetrating more easily, which can raise the risk of mastitis. That is why hyperkeratosis of the teat is an important indicator of teat and udder health.

No. ™AktivPULS is designed for both automated systems and milking parlors and carousels. The goal remains the same: a consistent, teat-friendly contact moment during machine milking of cows.

Yes. We offer variants for different systems and provide recommendations based on your brand, model, and settings. We use brand names solely to indicate compatibility.

Ideally, we look at your type of system, current liner, change interval, settings (vacuum and pulsation), and the teat condition in the herd. This allows us to match the right liner to your situation, enabling you to better manage SCC and mastitis in cows.
